Current Events

Kim Yuna and Brian Orser

On Aug. 2, 2010 Kim Yuna's long time coach, Brian Orser who had helped her win the gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics, was told by Kim Yuna's mother turned manager fired him without information as to why. Brian Orser made the dismissal extremely public, claiming he was "flabbergasted" and "upset."
Later Brian Orser disclosed Kim's program routine to the press, which is a huge and spiteful blow in the skating world. He also claimed it was her mother who decided to dismiss him, and not Yuna's.
However, Kim Yuna later wrote on her Cyworld:
"Do you think it's really true that my mother decided on her own to part ways with the coach? I'm no longer a child," wrote Kim, who turns 20 on Sept. 5. "He was my coach, and whether we stay on or part ways, it was my final decision, and this is what I decided to do, with discretion, after consulting with my mother."
She also wrote several tweets over her twitter. The tweet express her disappointment towards an unnamed person, possibly Brian Orser. The tweets were deleted almost immediately afterwards. Kim now trains with Peter Oppegard, brother in law to figure skating legend Michelle Kwan her longtime idol.

Kim Yuna is now preparing for an ice show with many top celebrities this August.

Career

After the beginning of her career on the ice at the age of seven, you could almost say that Kim Yuna was unstoppable. She was class
ified as a child prodigy on the ice during her fourth year in elementary school, and in 2002, at the age of 11, she won the gold medal at the Triglav Trophy competition. A year later, she was the youngest figure skater to win gold at the South Korean Figure Skating Championships. She maintained her place for three years before moving on to bigger opportunities.
At the 2006 World Junior Figure Skating Championships, Kim Yuna won for the forth time over her long time rival, Mao Asada.
After winning many other championships and competitions, Kim Yuna, along with her new coach Canadian Brian Orser tried their hand at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

short program routine.

Kim Yuna set a new world record in her short program, and won the gold medal over Mao Asada of Japan and Joannie Rochette of Canada. She had realised her long time dream.
Although her capabilities are unquestionable, I wonder if Kim Yuna will ever be as good as she was during the 2010 Winter Olympics. After all, she had been working hard for that title, and now that she has received it, there is a big chance she might
begin to unconsciously slow down the drive that once propelled her to first place.

Biography

Kim Yuna as a child

Kim Yuna was born on the fifth of November 1990 in South Korea. She lived in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do until she was six, when she moved to Gunpo.
Unlike Canada, South Korea is in desperate need of more ice skating facilities. If Yuna Kim wanted to skate, and on a national level, she had to stay up longer than any of her classmates, often into the morning. Indeed, it got so Yuna Kim would have given up had it not been for several coaches promising her of her talent, and her mother's incredible dedication and dreams.
Also, figure skating lessons were and are still enormously expensive.
Kim Yuna's mother and family had to give up many of their interests to continue supporting Yuna. She did not have proper skates, or the money to change those skates into newer ones.
Yuna Kim had trouble finding sponsors for herself, as South Korea did not reconize figure skating as an important sport at that time, until she won Junior World's Figure Skating.

Kim Yuna, along with her mother and father, has an older sister who is a nurse.
I believe there is a tremendous need to acknowledge Kim Yuna's mother at this point, it would not have been easy for her to spend all that money on sports when in Korea it is important to study well, and for her to drive Kim Yuna to her numerous skating practises.

Yuna and her mother, Park-Mi Hee

In 2009, Kim Yuna was admitted as a physical education major to Seoul University, the equivalent to Harvard to the USA in Korea. She received two F's during her first semester, possibly due to her extensive training in Canada and her lack of time. She has decided to take online courses during the rest for the rest of her education at Seoul University. Kim Yuna enjoys karaoking, and of course, figure skating.
